The disheartening decision, approved by the board, comes as the Symphony works to address its significant financial challenges and determine a path toward long-term stability. “For too long, our costs and our revenue have been out of balance,” stated Nashville Symphony CEO Mark Cantrell in a [press update](https://www.nashvillesymphony.org/22879??ref=pamphleteer.co). “Fixing that honestly, and for good, is the work in front of us now,” The decision will result in the furlough of 27 full-time staff members and all 77 orchestra musicians as the Nashville Symphony confronts an approximate [$10 million deficit](https://www.bizjournals.com/nashville/news/2026/09/28/symphony-furlough-suspends-season.html?ref=pamphleteer.co) in its current operating budget.But the writing has been on the wall. **Years in the Making** The Symphony's [current financial troubles](https://www.bizjournals.com/nashville/news/2026/09/22/symphony-finances-restructuing.html?ref=pamphleteer.co) came into public view last week. That said, the issue has been longstanding and has certainly been exacerbated by the recent death of one of the Symphony’s [main benefactors](https://www.nashvillescene.com/music/nashvillecream/nashville-symphony-financial-challenges-2026/article%5Fe9135674-e01b-5412-9179-a758663769b5.html?ref=pamphleteer.co), Martha Ingram. When the Symphony faced a previous financial crisis in 2013, Ingram stepped in to help. Her contribution allowed the organization to reach a deal with its lenders and avert foreclosure. At the time, the Symphony had [$83.5 million](https://symphony.org/nashville-symphony-discloses-details-of-recent-rescue-deal/?ref=pamphleteer.co) remaining on the original $102 million bond financing used to build the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. In May of this year, an agreement was met to extend the maturity of the loan made possible by Ingram by another five years. **The Symphony-Metro Pipeline?** When looking at finances, the Symphony-Metro pipeline is worth noting. Kevin Crumbo, when working as a consultant with KraftCPAs, provided [turnaround services](https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2018/01/27/nash-j27.html?ref=pamphleteer.co) to the Symphony starting in 2013 as it [grappled with financial mismanagement](https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2013/06/11/nash-j11.html?ref=pamphleteer.co) and extensive damage caused by Nashville’s 2010 flood. At the time, Crumbo also served as a [board member and treasurer](https://www.nashvillescene.com/news/in-the-wake-of-mounting-debt-the-nashville-symphony-attempts-to-restructure-its-finances-and/article%5F1a32fc09-0434-5cff-99c7-39123d16192f.html?ref=pamphleteer.co) for the Symphony. Years later, Crumbo [served](https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/2021/06/24/nashvilles-finance-director-kevin-crumbo-step-down-post-role/7777275002/?gnt-cfr=1&gca-cat=p&gca-uir=true&gca-epti=z1146xxe1146xxv005365d--59--b--59--&gca-ft=221&gca-ds=sophi&ref=pamphleteer.co) as Metro Nashville’s Director of Finance under Mayor John Cooper from September 2019 to mid-2021 and again under Mayor Freddie O’Connell from October 2023 to early January 2025. Metro’s [current](https://www.nashville.gov/departments/mayor/news/mayor-freddie-oconnell-appoints-jenneen-reed-director-department-finance?ref=pamphleteer.co) Director of Finance, Jenneen Reed, who succeeded Crumbo, also has ties to the symphony. The Nashville Symphony [appointed](https://www.nashvillesymphony.org/media/press-room/press-releases/news-releases/2023-press-releases/nashville-symphony-announces-jenneen-d-reed-as-new-chief-financial-officer/?ref=pamphleteer.co) Reed as the Chief Financial Officer in 2023\. Community Review Board members pushed back, arguing the new language could imply civilians are automatically responsible for triggering force, and asked MNPD to publicly explain the change. ([WSMV](https://www.wsmv.com/2026/09/29/metro-nashville-police-face-pushback-after-changing-use-force-terminology-response-resistance/?ref=pamphleteer.co)) - 🚨**East Nashville man accused of attacking woman he previously tried to strangle after prison release.** A 38-year-old man, Artwell Moyo II, is accused of attempting to kill a disabled woman for the second time at her East Nashville home, where police say he caused extensive damage, including destroying her electric chair lift and leaving all four stove burners on. 🚔 Moyo was recently released after serving a five-year sentence for attempting to strangle the same woman and now faces attempted criminal homicide, felony burglary, and felony vandalism, with bond set at $1,052,500\. Christa Pike is scheduled for execution by lethal injection [tomorrow](https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/29/us/tennessee-christa-pike-execution?ref=pamphleteer.co), September 30, 2026, for the 1995 torture and murder of fellow Job Corps student Colleen Slemmer when Pike was 18\.
