The [reduction](https://www.wsmv.com/2026/08/25/heres-when-food-tax-rate-will-decrease-nashville/?ref=pamphleteer.co) is expected to save an average family about $72 a year. Metro’s Finance Department estimates the cut will reduce Metro revenue by about $9.2 million in FY2027\. Before the cut, that local sales-tax revenue went into Metro’s general operating revenue. Local option sales tax is its [second-largest revenue source](https://www.nashville.gov/departments/finance/management-and-budget/citizens-guide-budget?ref=pamphleteer.co) in Metro. By law, at least half of the local sales-tax revenue must be allocated to schools. The remainder supports Metro’s general operations and services. **Somebody still has to pick up the tab** “We absorbed that in the budget,” Mayor Freddie O’Connell said of the revenue shortfall last week. “There have been a couple of proposals at the state level that would have allowed that grocery tax to come down where the state would absorb that rather than local jurisdictions.
