#### Nashville’s Choose How You Move sidewalk plan is delivering, but the city’s pedestrian network still has miles of catching up to do.

*From [Megan Podsiedlik](https://pamphleteer.co/author/megan/)*

“Your Half Cent at Work” signage is going up across Nashville on public transit and at events. But if you voted for Choose How You Move hoping it would make a meaningful dent in Music City’s sidewalk problems, you may be disappointed.

When speaking during today’s Mayor's Advisory Committee on Transportation [meeting](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31xjGPDDcqU&ref=pamphleteer.co), Chief Program Officer Sabrina Sussman explained how CHYM projects are limited to what is included in the [Transportation Improvement Program](https://www.nashville.gov/featured-initiatives/transit?ref=pamphleteer.co).

“It has a list of projects, and the revenues that are there are dedicated specifically to those projects, and that does mean it's only 86 miles of sidewalk,” said Sussman. "The sidewalk needs across the county are much, much more significant than that.”

Sussman says CHYM is hoping to coordinate with the Nashville Department of Transportation to build on existing sidewalk projects and close gaps in the network, but that type of partnership requires NDOT to dip into general fund dollars.

“If the only sidewalks we built were the Choose How You Move sidewalks, we would still be leaving significant gaps across the county,” said Sussman. “And so being able to pair \[that\] funding to really ensure the networks are complete is a critical, urgent need.”

According to committee member and Vice Mayor Angie Henderson, Nashville is “80 to 90 years behind on sidewalk infrastructure.” Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s half-cent sales tax initiative was championed under the slogan “Sidewalks, Signals, Service, Safety.” The actual rollout of sidewalks, however, tells a different story, and voters who expected those priorities to be addressed in that order feel shortchanged.

As it stands, six CHYM sidewalk projects are “unofficially” complete, five are moving toward construction, and 61 additional sidewalk projects are entering various stages of planning/survey/design.

- **🚛 Metro's $16M trash-truck deal under federal scrutiny.** Metro Nashville ultimately spent more than $16 million on 14 trash trucks leased through Cumberland Capital, a company owned by developer Mack McClung, after Nashville's primary trash collector went bankrupt in 2021\. The emergency arrangement involved then-Metro Water Services official John Honeysucker and engineer/land planner Roy Dale, all three of whom are now subjects of an ongoing federal investigation, although no federal charges have been filed against them.
