✹ WEEKLY FILM RUNDOWN: January 10-16

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (Dir. Christian Gudegast; Starring Gerard Butler, O’Shea Jackson Jr.) 2018’s twisty heist flick gets a sequel set amid Europe’s diamond trade. It’s not January without Gerard Butler as a grizzled law enforcement officer, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Now playing in theaters.

The Last Showgirl (Dir. Gia Coppola; Starring Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis) Anderson has earned serious award buzz for this indie about a Vegas dancer who navigates life when her show closes after three decades. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred and Regal Hollywood 27.

Better Man (Dir. Michael Gracey; Starring Robbie Williams) Brit Pop’s 90s badboy gets a biopic from the director of The Greatest Showman…but with Williams as a monkey. Its anti-Oscar-bait aura is as impressive as its reviews. Now playing in theaters.

Nickel Boys (Dir. RaMell Ross; Starring Brandon Wilson, Daveed Diggs) Documentarian Ross makes his fiction debut with this adaptation of Colton Whitehead’s Pulitzer-winning novel about two teens surviving an abusive real-life reform school. Now playing in theaters.

2024 In Tribute The Belcourt celebrates the lives of the cinematic luminaries we lost last year with this 12-film series of their greatest triumphs. This week’s honorees include Kris Kristofferson (A Star is Born), screenwriter Robert Towne (Chinatown), and horror royalty Tony Todd (Candyman).

From Ground Zero “22 Palestinian filmmakers living through war capture their lives in Gaza following the attacks on October 7, 2023, revealing stories beyond the headlines. Through a blend of animation, documentary, and fiction, they create a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. This film serves as a remarkable reflection of how art can thrive even in the darkest times, showcasing the enduring spirit and creativity that emerge amid ongoing devastation.” Well, we see how this is going to go. Now playing in theaters.
