The Brutalist (Dir. Brady Corbet; Starring Adrian Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce) A Jewish architect (Brody) immigrates to the U.S. in the aftermath of WWII and obsesses over artistic perfection under the patronage of an equally unhinged benefactor (Pearce) in the greatest American epic since There Will Be Blood. Now playing in 35mm at the Belcourt and IMAX at AMC Thoroughbred 20 and Regal Opry Mills 20. 

The Room Next Door (Dir. Pedro Almodóvar; Starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton) A war correspondent (Tilda Swinton) succumbing to cancer asks her estranged friend (Moore) to accompany her on a vacation that will end in her suicide in arthouse great Almodóvar’s impressive English debut. The Wolf Man (Dir. Leigh Whannell; Starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner) Blumhouse reteams with the director of 2020’s hit The Invisible Man for a contemporary take on the Universal Monsters property. Now playing in theaters. 

Oscar Rereleases The Los Angeles fires have delayed the Oscar nominations, but awards hopefuls Anora, Conclave, Sing Sing, The Substance, and The Wild Robot are back on the bigscreen gunning for an awards bounce from now until March. 

2024 In Tribute The Belcourt celebrates the lives of the cinematic luminaries we lost last year with this 12-film series of their greatest triumphs. This week’s honorees include Maggie Smith (Gosford Park) and James Earl Jones (Claudine).

One of Them Days (Dir. Lawrence Lamont; Starring Keke Palmer and SZA) Two down-on-their-luck roommates go to extremes to avoid eviction in this comedy produced by Issa Rae. Now playing in theaters. 

Autumn and the Black Jaguar (Dir. Gilles DeMaistre; Starring Lumi Pollack) A city teen who grew up in the rainforest returns to the Amaazin to save the jaguar she befriended in her youth from animal poachers in this family film. Now playing in theaters.

Los Frikis (Dir. Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz; Starring Héctor Medina) Two Cuban friends growing up in 90s Cuba inject themselves with HIV so they can live in a government facility and escape the nation’s crushing Castro Era poverty. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20.
