The Unholy Trinity (Dir. Richard Gray) A young gunslinger seeking vengeance for his hanged father finds himself torn between an Irish lawman (Pierce Brosnan) and a rogue gold hunter (Samuel L. Materialists (Dir. Celine Song) The director’s follow-up to Best Picture nominee Past Lives glows up the romcom as a NYC matchmaker (Dakota Johnson) develops an A24-style love triangle with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. The bigscreen needs more adult movies like this. Now playing in theaters.
Life of Chuck (Mike Flanagan) Stephen King’s latest foray into the life affirming features Tom Hiddleston as “Charles "Chuck" Krantz” who, “ experiences the wonder of love, the heartbreak of loss, and the multitudes contained in all of us.” Could be the summer’s sleeper hit. Now playing in theaters.
How to Train Your Dragon (Dir. Dean DeBlois) The animated new classic about a boy and his dragon gets a live-action remake. Now playing in theaters.
Sister Midnight (Dir. Karan Kandhari) The Indian arthouse meets indie twee in this tale of a put-upon Mumbai wife who develops a vigilante streak. Now playing at The Belcourt
Nashville:A City on Film/Altman at 100 The Belcourt turned 100 this year. So did the late Robert Altman. To celebrate, Nashville’s arthouse has curated a selection of films shot in Nashville from Harmony Korine’s Gummo to the little-seen Girl from Tobacco Row to Ernest Scared Stupid. The tribute to the 70s film icon features a lineup including Thieves Like Us, The Player, and California Split.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze and Shrek II @ Belcourt Midnights Nashville’s non-profit cinema goes green this weekend as the Ninja Turtles meet Vanilla Ice while fending off Shredder on Friday in 35mm (with a pizza eating contest to boot!). Then, America’s favorite ogre faces off against Prince Charming in the film that perfectly encapsulates the mid-aughts.
Friday the 13th (Dir. Sean Cunningham) Celebrate the iconic horror franchise’s 45th anniversary with this special nationwide screening in honor of the unlucky day. Friday at AMC and Regal.
Prime Minister (Lindsay Utz) A random documentarian tries to retcon disgraced New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s post-COVID reputation. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20.
