✹ WEEKLY FILM RUNDOWN: June 28-July 4

The latest releases and special screenings hitting Music City this week. For a complete list of upcoming releases, check out our 2024 Film Guide.

A Quiet Place: Day 1 One of sci-fi’s most reliable franchises gets a prequel starring Lupita Nyong'o and Djimon Hounsou that has garnered the same stellar reviews as its predecessors. Whether or not the no-dialogue schtick has worn thin, we’re just happy to see Michael Sarnoski follow up 2021’s best film, Pig, with all the toys in the studio sandbox. Now playing in theaters.

Horizon: An American Saga–Chapter 1 Fresh from Yellowstone, director/star Kevin Costner returns to his revisionist western roots with this two-part epic that interrogates American expansion in the days after the Civil War and features Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee, Jena Malone, and Michael Rooker. The merch should be hitting Buc-ees and Cracker Barrel any day now even if the reviews aren’t as strong as Costner wanted coming out of Cannes. Now playing in theaters.

Kinds of Kindness Hot on the hills of last year’s best film, Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos reteams with Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe for a triptych ensemble film about the limits of desire and good manners that also features Jesse Plemoms, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, and Joe Alwyn. Sure to be the kind of challenging and brilliant work that’s all too rare in summer moviegoing. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20, The Belcourt, and Regal Opry Mills 20

Daddio A movie in which Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson drive in a cab from JFK airport to Midtown Manhattan in real time sounds awful, but, as we discussed in our recent review, it’s one of the year’s biggest surprises. Now playing in theaters.

A Celebration of Nicole Kidman @ The Belcourt As if the 1999 series weren’t enough, Nashville’s nonprofit cinema has assembled a career retrospective of the city’s most famous resident in honor of her recent American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. Kidman hand-selected eight of her best films, which will all screen twice, beginning with Gus Van Sant’s neo-noir To Die For and Kubrick’s farewell to 1999, Eyes Wide Shut. The series also includes Dogville, Cold Mountain, Birth, Rabbit Hole, Moulin Rouge!, and The Others–the latter of which Kidman will introduce on Saturday, June 29th.

Janet Planet A preteen girl spends the summer of 1991 in rural Massachusetts falling out of love with her navel-gazing mother (Dream Scenario’s Julianne Nicholson) in Pulitzer-winning playwright Annie Baker’s film debut. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20 and The Belcourt.

Something to Stand For with Mike Rowe The Dirty Jobs host and working class hero spins a series of stories from American history just in time for July 4th weekend. Now playing in theaters.

A Sacrifice A social psychologist (Eric Bana) researching German cults finds work and home melding when his teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) gets lured in by an enigmatic faith leader in Berlin. Now playing in theaters.

Blue Lock The Movie-Episode Nagi A teenage striker sets the soccer world ablaze in this anime teen drama. Now playing in theaters

Kalki 2898 A.D. India’s latest sci-fi epic finds a warrior battling elites in a dystopian future. Now playing in theaters.
