Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Dir. Tim Burton; Starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega) The wisecracking ghoul returns from a 36-year hiatus to wreak havoc on Winona Ryder’s Goth trendsetter and her teenage daughter in a sequel that rings in the Halloween season with a gusto only Tim Burton could manage. Eno (Dir. Gary Hurstwit) Any documentary about the iconic Roxy Music frontman and Talking Heads/U2 producer would be a must-see. But, director Gary Hustwit upped the ante by helming the world’s first generative movie that–much like an Eno show–never replicates itself. Using software developed specifically for the project, Hustwit gives Eno’s life the “Choose Your Own Adventure Treatment” with millions of possibilities. Those of us who saw it at The Belcourt this summer had a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Now, everyone else can. Now playing at the Belcourt. 

Close Your Eyes (Dir. Victor Erice; Starring Jose Coronado and Mono Solo) The writer/director of Franco regime Spanish classic The Spirit of the Beehive interrupts his long break from filmmaking for a spiritual sequel to that arthouse classic about the daughter of an actor lost at sea who tries to stop the press from exploiting images from his last film. Playing through Wednesday at The Belcourt. 

The Front Room (Dir. Max Eggers; Starring Brandy Norwood) Former teen R&B senesation Brandy plays a pregnant woman facing off against her demonic mother-in-law in A24’s latest horror offering. Now playing in theaters. 

Red Rooms (Dir. Pascal Plante; Starring Juliette Gariépy) The French continue their all-out assault on the ethics of murder shows with this thriller about a woman who becomes obsessed with a serial killer’s trial only to learn she bears a resemblance to his last unidentified victim. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20 and opening Wednesday at The Belcourt. 

Paris, Texas (Dir. Wim Wenders; Starring Harry Dean Stanton and Nastassja Kinski) Nothing has ever quite matched this paring of the New German Cinema great and American playwright Sam Shepard’s contemplative tale of a drifter traveling to L.A. while searching for his estranged son and wife. A full-blown cinematic masterpiece newly restored in glorious 4K. Now playing at The Belcourt 

The Thicket (Dir. Elliott Lester; Starring Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis) A dwarf bounty hunter leads a ragtime team of misfits to track down a ruthless killer in this indie western that’s earned solid notices. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20 and Regal Hollywood 27.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (Dir. Peter Greenaway; Starring Helen Mirren, Michael Gambon, and Tim Roth) The Belcourt brings the notorious NC-17 classic about a deranged criminal and his cheating wife centered at a trendy restaurant back for a second helping this year. Playing Wednesday

We Are Fugazi from Washington D.C. (Dirs. Joe Gross, Jeff Krulik, Joseph Pattisall) The seminal punk band gets a “non-documentary” to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their last live appearance. Playing as part of Music City Mondays at The Belcourt.

Lover of Men: The Untold Story of Abraham Lincoln (Dir. Shaun Peterson) Honest Abe was gay, guys! Now there’s a basic-ass documentary about it! Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20 and Regal Hollywood 27.

Tokoyo Cowboy (Dir. Marc Marriott; Starring Arata Iura) A Tokoyo executive discovers himself while on a business trip tp a Montana ranch in this well-reviewed indie. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20. 

I’ll Be Right There (Dir. Brendan Walsh; Starring Edie Falco) A divorcee with a pregnant daughter navigates romance and the other foibles of the sandwich generation. Now playing at Regal Hollywood 27. 

El Cadidato Honesto (Dir. Luis Felipe Ybarra; Starring Teresa Ruiz) On the eve of his election, a corrupt politician’s poltergeist grandmother gives him the curse of honesty. Now playing at Regal Hollywood 27. 

The Greatest of All Time (Telugu and Tamil) “Gandhi is a hostage negotiator, field agent and spy working for the Special Anti-Terrorist Squad, where he works along with three others. Following years, problems stemmed by their previous actions occurs, which they must fight against.” Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20 and Regal Hollywood 27.
