✹ THANKSGIVING FILM RUNDOWN: November 22-Dec 6

The latest releases and special screenings hitting Music City this week. For a complete list of upcoming releases, check out our 2024 Film Guide.

Gladiator II (Dir. Ridley Scott; Starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington) Maximus’s son follows in his father’s footsteps by rising up the gladiatorial ranks to seek vengeance against a noxious imperial official. It’s probably entirely unnecessary, but as long as it’s more like The Last Duel than Napoleon, we’re in. Now playing in theaters.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin (Dir. Todd Komarnicki; Starring Jonas Dassler) The iconic German priest who tried to kill Hitler gets a long past-due biopic as resonant with contemporary politics as it is inspiring. Read our interview with Komarnicki here. Now playing in theaters.

Bird (Dir. Andrea Arnold; Starring Barry Keoghan) The latest from the Fish Tank and American Honey director finds a distracted dad and his preteen daughter learning to commune with animals. It sounds a little like it’s spinning off the planet, but Arnold has yet to make anything close to underwhelming. Now playing at the Belcourt.

Moana II (Dir. David G. Derrick, Jr.; Starring The Rock) Like Donald Trump, Disney’s 2016 hit about a Polynesian princess striking out into the great unknown gets a second act eight years later. Now playing in theaters.

Wicked (Dir. Jon M. Chu; Starring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum) The Broadway riff on The Wizard of Oz from the Wicked Witch’s perspective undergoes the splashy Hollywood  treatment. It’s on track to make some Barbie money even though, Goldblum excluded, it has the worst casting we’ve seen in a while. Now playing in theaters.

Il Grido (Dir. Michelangelo Antonioni; Starring Steve Cochran) The Italian filmmaking legend’s breakthrough finds a small town sugar refinery worker coping with his dwindling romantic and economic opportunities as he drifts through rural villages. In glorious 4K. Now playing at the Belcourt.

The Sacrifice (Dir. Andrei Tarkovsky; Starring Erland Josephson) A family on a remote Nordic island deals with the onset of a nuked-up WWIII in a new 4K restoration of the Russian auteur’s final film. Now playing in theaters.

The Terminator (Dir. James Cameron; Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton) The 80s classic that defined the contemporary action movie gets the 4K treatment. Now playing at The Belcourt.

Naked Acts (Dir. Bridgett M. Davis; Starring Jake-Ann Jones) The actress daughter of a former blaxploitation star seeks her estranged mother’s advice when her debut in an art film requires a nude scene in the 4K restoration of this underground 90s triumph. Now playing at the Belcourt.

The Last Waltz (Dir. Martin Scorsese) The Belcourt continues its annual holiday tradition with Marty’s classic 1978 doc about The Band’s final performance. Playing at the Belcourt as part of Music City Mondays

Bolly/Tolly/Kolly/Lollywood and Other Special Presentations of Asian and Middle Eastern Imports.

Playing at AMC Regal Hollywood 27: Mechanic Rocky (Telugu), Sookshama Darshini (Malayalam), Zebra (Telugu), Kanguva (Hindi), I Want to Talk (Hindi)
