About this data

Source: ICE arrest and detention records obtained by the Deportation Data Project (UC Berkeley and UCLA) through FOIA litigation. The file runs from Oct. 1, 2022 through Aug. 5, 2026; this page starts in Jan. 2023. The monthly charts stop at July 2026, the last full month. Yearly totals for 2026 include Aug. 1–5.

Nashville means arrests in Tennessee whose arrest city is in Davidson County: Nashville and North Nashville (including misspellings), Antioch, Madison, Hermitage, Goodlettsville, Oak Hill, Old Hickory, Whites Creek, Joelton and "Davidson." This yields Davidson County arrests for Jan. 2025 to Aug. 2026.

The early-2023 records:

Which years each chart covers: Monthly charts begin in Jan. 2023, with the early-2023 records labeled. Charts of all arrests by year begin in 2024, because those records make up most of 2023. Charts that count only people who were deported (countries and the county map) include 2023, because those records never led to detention.

Deported means the person's detention stay ended in removal. Country is the person's country of citizenship as ICE records it.

County map: each Tennessee arrest is assigned to a county using the Census Bureau's list of Tennessee places and their counties, with common misspellings fixed by hand. When no city is recorded, the county jail where ICE logged the arrest is used. About 1% of Tennessee arrests can't be placed. This method counts Davidson County slightly differently from the Nashville definition above, so its totals run a few dozen higher: it also picks up arrests logged at the Davidson County jail with no city, and a few misspelled or satellite-city records.

Prior orders combine ICE's flag for a final order issued before the arrest with case category 16 (reinstated final order). Years in the U.S. run from the recorded entry date to the arrest date; most records have no entry date.
