Metro to Audit Office of Homeless Services

🍻 Bar Hours return next week · Metro will audit OHS · TPAC deadline approaches · The AG takes on DEI at Deloitte · Much more!

Good afternoon, everyone. Bar Hours returns next week. Join us for a beer... The city is going to audit the Office of Homeless Services because they're wasting money as their budget grows and homeless population increases... The deadline for settling the TPAC arrangement on the East Bank approaches... And much more!

Like what we do? Forward us to a friend.

We're getting the band back together for a happy hour on Wednesday next week. Middle Tennessee will be an area of intense political and cultural warfare over the next year.

As we enter a new era of American political and cultural life following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, it's more important than ever that god-fearing, faithful, freedom-loving Nashvillians get together.

Expect a lively crowd of readers, writers, entrepreneurs, and neighbors of all stripes. Join us to network, trade ideas, and prepare for the future. RSVP here for the location.

💸 Scrupulous Eye On Homeless Services The Metro Nashville Audit Committee approved an audit of the Metro Office of Homeless Services (OHS) following a request from Councilmember Ginny Welsch.

The District 16 representative has raised concerns about financial mismanagement, the status of deliverables, and the department's ethics. According to the Scene, Welsch has also called for the firing of OHS Director April Calvin, emphasizing the need for transparency amid a steadily increasing homelessness population despite increased funding.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Calvin defended her department and highlighted its transparency and progress. Constituents and members of the homeless population also came to OHS’s defence during public comments, criticizing Welsch's request as an over-the-top hack job. Ultimately, the committee decided to take a closer look into the department’s finances while also keeping Welsch’s other requests in mind.

🎭 TPAC East Bank Deadline Approaches The Tennessee Performing Arts Center faces a year-end deadline to finalize an agreement with Metro for a new arts center on the East Bank as Chief Development Officer Bob Mendes steps down from his position in the mayor’s office. According to the Nashville Business Journal, Mendes was key in negotiating a memorandum of understanding between TPAC, Metro, and the firm hired to develop the Metro-owned land in the East Bank, The Fallon Co.

As a member of the East Bank Development Authority board, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton has criticized Metro’s misleading messaging regarding its relationship with the TPAC, who have been struggling to agree on a plan to relocate the center to the East Bank. Sexton has also accused Metro officials of trying to push TPAC out.

⚖️ The AG Takes on DEI Tennessee’s Attorney General, Jonathan Skrmetti, has launched a civil investigation into the accounting giant Deloitte to examine whether its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices crossed legal boundaries. The state is demanding internal documents — including emails, hiring records, and policy materials dating back to 2022 — to assess claims that Deloitte instituted race- or gender-based hiring quotas under its DEI program.

The probe arrives in the wake of the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court decision ending race-conscious admissions policies at colleges, which has spurred broader scrutiny of DEI efforts across sectors. Tennessee’s AG and other state leaders argue that treating individuals differently on the basis of race—even with “benign” intentions—can violate civil-rights law.
