Captain America: Brave New World (Disney+) Marvel’s winter hit clearly suffered some fallout from the 2023 Writers’ Strike, but Anthony Mackie proves himself a worthy successor to the OG Cap in this more grounded espionage-centric entry. Watch the newly-minted Sam Wilson don the shield and take on a group of assassins gunning for Harrison Ford’s gruffly charming President.
Stick (AppleTV+) Owen Wilson gets an all-too-rare time to shine as a golf pro who finds a second chance of fulfillment after an on-course meltdown ruined his own career at its peak. It’s the perfect TV role for one of America’s most underutilized actors.
Pig (Netflix) This post-COVID Nicholas Cage vehicle about a culinary genius on the search for his kidnapped truffle hunting pig was hands down our pick for the best movie of 2023. As we said then, “Michael Sarnoski’s debut film is a Cage-led tour through Portland’s culinary underworld that is as profound in its meditations on grief as it is savvy about the moral bankruptcy rippling through American hipsterdom.” A must watch.
