✸ WEEKLY FILM RUNDOWN: March 22-29

The latest releases and special screenings hitting Music City this week. For a complete list of upcoming releases, check out our 2024 Film Guide

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire The last entry in the stalwart 80s franchise bypassed the worst tendencies of nostalgia-obsessed requels and had something to say about trusting the science. This time Busters old (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts) and new (Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Patton Oswalt) face a supernatural force that goes full Queen Elsa on New York City. Now playing in theaters.

Pictures of Ghosts  Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho follows up 2020’s awe-inspiring Bacurau with an intimate video essay about the moviehouses of Recife, the Brazilian coastal capital of Pernambuco, that captures the cultural spirit of the city. Now playing at the Belcourt.

Late Night With The Devil This entry in the found footage canon from Australia details a 1977 talk show Halloween special that goes horribly awry when a young girl who escaped a satanic cult unleashes pure evil in the studio. It’s been building buzz since its fest premieres last year. Now playing in theaters.

Days of Heaven Terrence Malick shot this turn-of-the-century tale about the love triangle involving a farmer (Sam Shepard), a criminal (Richard Gere), and the woman they love (Brooke Adams) entirely during the magic hours of dawn and dusk. If you had to see one movie on the big screen, it should be this stone-cold masterpiece. Playing at The Belcourt as part of Music City Mondays’s tribute to Ennio Morricone.

Immaculate Sydney Sweeney reteams with The Voyeurs director Michael Mohan for this demonic yarn about a nun who moves to a convent in the idyllic Italian countryside and faces the evil underneath the service. Between its star wattage and release by hip distributor Neon (Parasite, Infinity Pool), it could be the biggest surprise of the spring. Now playing in theaters.

Here A Romanian construction worker living in Brussels who plans a return trip home to visit his ailing mother gets stopped in his tracks by a woman earning a doctorate on mosses in this quirky Belgian dramedy. Now playing at the Belcourt.

About Dry Grasses Turkey’s resident epic maker Nuri Bilge Ceylan turns his attention to a rural art teacher yearning to move to Istanbul whose relationship with a rebellious colleague forces him to confront what he’s long repressed. Now playing at the Belcourt.

The Peasants The creative team behind 2017’s gorgeous Loving Vincent bring their impressionistic animated style to a tale of a 19th-century woman whose romantic links to powerful men in her village may be her downfall. Now playing at Regal Hollywood 27.

The Dark Knight Trilogy See Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga like you haven’t since 2012. Now playing at The Belcourt

The Boy and the Heron The likely last film from Japanese animated legend Hayao Miyazaki gets its post-Oscar victory lap with this rerelease. Through his relationship with the titular heron, a young boy confronts the postwar death around him. Now playing in theaters

Luca Disney’s streaming apology tour continues with Pixar’s 2021’s animated fable about a goatfish child finding a best bud in the surface world. Now playing in theaters.
