Y2K (Dir. Kyle Mooney; Starring Rachel Zegler, Fred Durst [!!!]) The SNL alum returns to the director’s chair after the wildly underrated Brigsby Bear for a Gremlins-inspired horror comedy about teenagers battling sentient machines in an alternate universe where 1999 was indeed humanity’s final party. The Return (Dir. Umberto Pasolini; Starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche) This new riff on The Odyssey finds Fiennes as the mythic aging Trojan War hero trying to piece his life back together. Reviews have been strong despite it being dumped into the multiplex on an off week. Now playing in theaters.
Nightbitch (Dir. Marielle Heller; Starring Amy Adams) Not only can’t women have it all, but, as this prestige horror-comedy proves, sometimes they just have to mutate into wild dogs–especially if they are stay-at-home moms in the suburbs. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20.
Interstellar in IMAX (Dir. Christopher Nolan; Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway) All I want for Christmas is to see Matthew McConaughey ramble about corn for 45 minutes before time traveling through space on the biggest screen possible. Queer (Dir. Luca Guadagnino; Starring Daniel Craig) The filmmaker behind Challengers and the Suspiria remake takes on Beat writer William S. Burroughs’s classic novel about an expat’s love and loss in sunny Mexico City. Now playing at The Belcourt.
The Wages of Fear A ragtag group of truckers haul loads of nitroglycerin across the mountains of South America in Henri-Georges Clouzot’s master class in action-movie tension. In glorious 4K. Now playing at The Belcourt.
The Order (Dir. Justin Kurzel; Starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Marc Maron) The true story of an FBI agent fending off a dangerous gang of white supremacists in the 80s gets the bigscreen treatment tailor-made for “these times.” Now playing in theaters.
Flow (Dir. Gints Zilbalodis) A cat leads a capybara, a lemur, a bird, and a dog on a search for dry land when their home is devastated in this arthouse animated tale giving Pixar a run for its money this awards season. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred and The Belcourt.
The Sugarland Express (Dir. Steven Spielberg; Starring Goldie Hawn and William Atherton) An outlaw couple on the run lose their baby and become infamous in Spielberg’s sophomore film now restored in 4K. Now playing at the Belcourt.
