Imaginary When a little girl finds a teddy bear named Chauncey in the basement of her new house, it might just be a conduit for demonic imaginary friends. A Blumhouse release and great trailer make it seem promising, but director Jeff Wadlow’s Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island have been two of the most milquetoast horror films in recent memory. Kung Fu Panda 4 Poe (Jack Black) must train a protege and take on a shapeshifting mystic in the latest installment of an animated franchise that’s somehow remained fresh for a good decade and a half. Now playing in theaters.  

Ennio The director of Cinema Paradiso turns his attention to composer extraordinaire Ennio Morricone with assists from Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino, Joan Baez, and Dario Argento in this sprawling documentary. Playing Monday at The Belcourt.

Cabrini Angel Studios reteams with the director of Sound of Freedom for a biopic of the Catholic missionary and future saint who fought the New York political machine to provide the poor better lives. It may be a fine Lenten diversion but don’t expect Scorsese here. Now playing in theaters. 

Tótem A seven-year-old girl awaits her birthday party with bated breath without realizing it may be her first foray into the world of adults’ problems in this gem of a film from rising Mexican director Lila Avilés. Now playing at The Belcourt. 

Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell A Vietnamese man charged with bringing his nephew to his family's hometown after the death of his sister contends with the past and his uncertain future in the debut film that won the Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Now playing in theaters. 

Accidental Texan A failing actor stranded in rural Texas poses as a landowner for an oil driller about to lose everything at the hands of a corrupt tycoon in this comedy featuring Thomas Haden Church and Bruce Dern. Now playing at AMC Thoroughbred 20.

The Before Trilogy Marathon Richard Linklater revisited the story of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s accidental lovers traipsing through Europe every ten years from 1995-2013 in one of cinema’s greatest romances. Playing as a marathon Sunday at the Belcourt.

Oscar Film Fest The ten contenders for best picture return to The Belcourt, AMC, and Regal. Experience pop-culture juggernauts Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Killers of the Flower Moon as they were meant to be seen. Take a chance on intimate dramas Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, and The Holdovers that didn’t quite get their due earlier this year. Support holiday releases American Fiction, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest as they finally get nationwide releases. Sure, you can watch Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein in Maestro on Netflix, but aren’t you tired of being home? This is the best crop of nominees since 1975 and a full-throated rallying cry that the movies still matter.
