O’Connell took the week off. No events on his public calendar and whispers that he’s absconded to Kokomo to kick rocks as a federal investigation looms on the horizon and conversations around the budget draw to a close.

And to boot, as tensions around the country rise in response to the Trump administration's efforts to enforce immigration laws, Nashville is set for protests on Friday and Saturday.

We discussed Friday’s protest in yesterday’s newsletter. By my assessment, it will mostly be geriatrics holding signs and yelling at passing cars. I say that because one of the groups involved, Th!rd Act Tennessee describes itself as “a national movement of older Americans” and the other groups give off nursing home vibes.

On Saturday, there is a “No Kings” rally at the Bicentennial Mall. “They’ve defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services,” reads the website. “The corruption has gone too. far. No thrones. No crowns. No kings.”

No Kings, which has protests scheduled across the nation on Saturday, is a reaction to Trump’s planned Flag Day military parade. Axios published the map of protests in their newsletter this morning, which had me rhetorically wondering whose side they were on.

The protests have received nationwide media coverage and promotion. Partners on the site include the ACLU, the Human Rights Campaign, Planned Parenthood, and many others, including my favorite organization name, Tax the Greedy Billionaires.

An alternative reason to attend might be if you’ve run out of your medication, and for whatever reason, can’t make it to the pharmacy that day. I’m sure the crowd at the mall will be well stocked. DAVIS HUNT

🏛️ Green Plans To End Term Early Representative Mark Green intends to step down from his position in Congress as soon as the House votes on the Big Beautiful Bill. This is the second time Green has announced plans to step away from office. He made a similar announcement back in 2024 but reversed course after encouragement from Donald Trump. At the time, it was widely speculated that Green planned to make a run for Governor. This time, he says he’s been “offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up.”

Since Green’s term was set to end on January 3, 2027, his early resignation leaves a gap in Tennessee's 7th Congressional District. According to Tennessee Code, the governor will order a special election to fill the vacancy.

📜 State Leaders Introduce Doxxing Bill Yesterday, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton and Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson introduced a bill that would make doxxing a federal, state, or local officer, agent, or official participating in federal immigration enforcement activities in the state a punishable crime. Not only does the legislation expand the language defining the criminally negligent release of certain confidential records, but it can also be grounds for an ouster if carried out by state or local government entities or officials.

"The people of Tennessee expect their elected leaders to protect law enforcement—not endanger them," Johnson told Fox 17. "When a public official like Mayor O’Connell chooses political activism over public safety, especially by interfering with federal immigration enforcement, he has no business holding office in this state."

"Mayor O’Connell’s decision to release sensitive information undermines the rule of law, violates public trust, and jeopardizes the safety of those who protect our communities,” said Sexton. “This bill makes it clear: if you use your office to interfere with federal immigration enforcement or endanger officers, there will be swift and serious consequences. Tennessee will not be a sanctuary for lawlessness."

🔥 Library Garage Destroyed In Fire No injuries were reported after a fire broke out in the Downtown Nashville Library parking garage this morning. According to News 2, the Nashville Fire Department responded to the scene around 1:20 a.m. after residents reported hearing explosions in the popular lot on 6th Avenue N. Surrounding residents were asked to evacuate their buildings, and those with vehicles parked in the garage were asked to leave them behind. The blaze originated on the top floors, multiple cars were on fire, and there are reports that part of the building has since collapsed. As of this writing, the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Through the years, Nashville Fire Station 9 has repeatedly landed among the 20 busiest fire stations in the country. In 2021, the downtown station was ranked number one for calls for service by Firehouse Magazine. Every year, they respond to around 35,000 calls. Firefighters and EMTs who serve at Station 9 can individually participate in upwards of 1,000 calls per year.

✹ THIS WEEK IN STREAMING (June 10th)

Our recommendations to counteract the endless scrolling.

Captain America: Brave New World (Disney+) Marvel’s winter hit clearly suffered some fallout from the 2023 Writers’ Strike, but Anthony Mackie proves himself a worthy successor to the OG Cap in this more grounded espionage-centric entry. Watch the newly-minted Sam Wilson don the shield and take on a group of assassins gunning for Harrison Ford’s gruffly charming President.

Stick (AppleTV+) Owen Wilson gets an all-too-rare time to shine as a golf pro who finds a second chance of fulfillment after an on-course meltdown ruined his own career at its peak. It’s the perfect TV role for one of America’s most underutilized actors.

Pig (Netflix) This post-COVID Nicholas Cage vehicle about a culinary genius on the search for his kidnapped truffle hunting pig was hands down our pick for the best movie of 2023. As we said then, “Michael Sarnoski’s debut film is a Cage-led tour through Portland’s culinary underworld that is as profound in its meditations on grief as it is savvy about the moral bankruptcy rippling through American hipsterdom.” A must watch.
